The Macallan, one of the world’s most collectable whiskies, has become synonymous with rare, special releases and other small production run bottlings. One of the most recent is The Macallan “M”, composed from seven distinct casks selected after two years of searching through The Macallan’s vast cellars of over 195,000 barrels. Contained in hand-blown 750 mL Lalique crystal decanters, The Macallan M is intended to be an ongoing (albeit rare) addition to the brand’s 1824 series of top-tier whiskies. With luxury usually comes scarcity and “M” is no exception, offering just 355 bottles in the U.S. priced at $4,500 each. A special six-liter “Imperiale” decanter, the largest ever made by Lalique, recently sold for $628,000 at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, breaking the world record for whisky sold at auction. The decanter took 17 craftsman over 50 hours to complete and weighed over 30 pounds. There is luxury, and there is grandeur.
